Roopanand Rick on The Avengers: Does Robert Downey Jr. deserve the (very) fat paycheck?

It was another normal day at my home office yesterday. While I, Roopanand Rick, was reading the latest news to find a topic to blog about, I noticed that Paray was beside my action figures collection cabinet, staring at her favorite superhero – Iron Man.

Coincidently, I came across an article on Yahoo! discussing the paychecks received by the cast of The Avengers. According to the post, Robert Downey Jr., who starred as Iron Man, is the highest paid cast member in the movie, slated to pick up $50 million (bonuses included) from the film. Meanwhile, the rest of the main cast will just get salaries way below Robert’s.

Here is the breakdown:

$2 million - $3 million

• Chris Hemsworth (Thor)
• Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye)
• Chris Evans (Captain America)
• Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk)

$4 million - $6 million

• Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury)
• Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow)

There’s still no word from Downey or Marvel that this report is true. However, while other film experts think that Downey may have gotten too much, I think he deserves to get that amount. For me, he was the highest draw in the movie, considering the fact that Iron Man and Iron Man 2 have been two of the highest grossing Marvel movies before The Avengers, opening at $200,174,140 and $220,766,270 respectively. It is also pretty much obvious that Iron Man played a key role in The Avengers.
