Hero or villain? Roopanand Rick on the crime thriller TV series Dexter

One friend of mine once asked me, “Roopanand Rick, where’d you get the names of your pet cats Paray, Gypsy, Max, and Dexter?” My answer to her was quite extensive, so extensive that if I take the time to explain, it would probably start to bore you, guys. But there’s a reason why I’m telling you this for today I will talk about the TV series that inspired the name Dexter and that is, of course, Showtime’s crime thriller Dexter.

A serial killer with a heart

Profiling serial killer stories isn’t a new territory when it comes to creative media. There have been a lot of ruthless characters that were introduced by the entertainment industry, especially in slasher films. But in Dexter, we are introduced to a serial killer who—believe it or not—has genuine conscience.

I, Roopanand Rick, named my cat (the one who always chases Paray all around the house) Dexter because of my utmost fascination of the TV series. Loosely based on a novel by Jeff Lindsay, the TV series have shown—throughout its six seasons of airing—how the serial killer, Dexter, lives his life despite his violent streaks.

What I liked about this TV series is that it does not tell you if Dexter, who only kills other serial killers, is a villain or a hero. It does not exactly justify his actions yet the narration of his tale allows the audience to sympathize with him. Filled with suspenseful encounters with deadly and cold-blooded killers, the genius plot takes the viewers into an enjoyable rollercoaster of emotions.
